Sidney

Meet Sidney.

Sidney’s life began in the most unlikely and dangerous of places. As a newly hatched chick, he was found wandering alone beside a busy highway between Sydney and Canberra. Tiny, fragile, and completely out of place, Sidney stood no chance against the rush of traffic around him.

If not for the sharp eyes and quick action of a kind passerby who noticed him, pulled over, and scooped him up, Sidney’s story would have ended almost as soon as it began. That small act of compassion saved his life.

From the moment Sidney arrived at Little Oak Sanctuary, it was clear he was something special. Despite his terrifying start, he was confident, curious, and full of character. He bonded quickly with people and seemed determined to make up for lost time, greeting the world with enthusiasm and a surprisingly big voice for such a small chick.

As Sidney grew and his feathers came in, his personality only became more pronounced. Once he was big enough, he joined our poultry yard, where he now lives alongside other hens, roosters, ducks, and turkeys. He navigates this mixed flock with ease, confidence, and plenty of charm.

Sidney is outgoing, social, and always keen to know what is happening around him. He reminds us that even the smallest lives carry enormous potential, and that a single moment of care can change everything.

Sidney’s story is proof that compassion does not need to be grand to be powerful. Sometimes, it is simply noticing, stopping, and choosing to help. Because someone did exactly that, Sidney is alive today, strutting, thriving, and very much loved.

Help Birds

Aside from sea creatures, Chickens are the most exploited of all animals on earth.  Did you know that for every 100 animals killed for food, 98.5 are chickens?  Chickens are complex and intelligent birds who are often underestimated and undervalued.

At Little Oak Sanctuary we have over 100 birds in our care including hens, roosters, ducks, geese, turkeys, partridges, quail, and pigeons. We purchase between 10-15 bags of feed every week to feed these birds, and regular health checks and vet care where needed means any illnesses are identified and treated quickly. Its the high level of care these birds need and deserve, but it doesn't come cheaply.

When you become a sponsor at Little oak you will be helping Chickens, Roosters, Ducks, Geese and Turkeys. Your sponsorship will support Little Oak's essential advocacy work – sharing the stories of individual birds and the plight of their kind across the nation.
