Polly Piggins

"I dare you to be great – go, on stand up and speak out. We get to determine what the future is.” ― Polly Higgins

Polly Piggins was born on 30 October 2014.

Born on the 30th of October in 2014, Albert Sweinstein & Polly Piggins came into the world as part of a school "Paddock to plate" programs.  In these programs, which aim to show children where 'food' comes from, at the same time raising revenue for the school, pigs are bred to be sold for slaughter.

Aside from the intended message, these programs also teach children to put aside their empathy and that compassion is reserved only for those we choose to give it to.  Fortunately, for two piglets, one child's parents refused to participate, instead choosing to save the piglets from slaughter.  Of course, their story did not end there.

Saved by a loving, compassionate family living in suburbia, Albert and his sister Polly Piggins soon became the target of complaints from neighbours. And so, the call went out to try and find them a more suitable forever home. Fortunately, we were able to offer this pair sanctuary, and with the help of the beautiful people at Hart Acres Animal Haven, we arranged their 9-hour journey to their new home.

We named Albert after the inspirational Albert Einstein, whose smarts extended to emotional intelligence. Polly was named after the amazing Eco Activist Polly Higgins, who has dedicated her life fighting for planet earth and asks us to dare to ask the big questions and determine our own future.

Albert & Polly now live on as activists for pigs, ambassadors of kindness.

Sponsor a Pig

Pigs are the flagship species for Little Oak – indeed it was a pig who inspired us to start the sanctuary and of all animals, they hold a very special significance to us. Pigs are amazing beings, they are smart, funny characters, sadly we rarely get to see them as the individuals they are. Today, over 5 million pigs are confined in sheds across the country each year. Their lives are short and filled with suffering - but it doesn't have to be this way.

When you sponsor a pig you will be helping protect pigs. Your sponsorship will support Little Oak's essential advocacy work – sharing the stories of individual pigs and the plight of their kind across the nation.

Sponsor today, and we'll take you on a journey to learn more about pigs through our regular updates - exclusive only to our monthly sponsors. We'll also keep you up to date on how your monthly gifts are helping to secure a brighter future for the pigs at Little Oak, and their kind across Australia.
