Hazel

Born: 9 June 2024 | Arrived: 13 July 2024

Hazel came into the world with a gentle heart and a unique challenge — born with congenital cataracts, she has very limited vision. But from the moment she arrived at Little Oak Sanctuary, this sweet young calf began navigating her world with remarkable courage, trust, and quiet determination.

Still just a baby when she arrived, Hazel needed time to adjust to her new home. With patience and consistency, she began learning her way around, guided by sound, scent, and touch — and always surrounded by care. Her days quickly filled with sunshine, cuddles, and careful exploration, including the occasional joyful (if slightly clumsy) zoomies.

Not long after settling in, Hazel was visited by a veterinary eye specialist to assess whether cataract surgery might be an option for her. While cataract surgery is relatively common in humans and companion animals, it’s rarely undertaken for cattle, and presents unique risks and challenges. Hazel’s eye health, aside from the cataracts, looked promising — but her comfort and wellbeing remain the sanctuary’s top priority as any next steps are carefully considered.

Hazel may not see the world the way other calves do, but she experiences it deeply — through affection, scent, sunshine, and the familiar sounds of sanctuary life. Every step she takes is a testament to her resilience, and a reminder that animals with disabilities can live full, happy lives when given the chance.

Hazel is now thriving in the safety of sanctuary, surrounded by love and guided gently through life. Thanks to supporters like you, she has the opportunity to grow up not just safely, but joyfully — just as every calf should.
