Agatha

“Anything that is held in secret cannot be healed. The light cannot reach that which is locked away in the dark.” ~ Donna Goddard, Waldmeer

Meet Agatha.

Agatha is a beautiful Buff Orpington hen who was hatched in November 2021. She began her life as part of a small backyard flock, where she knew the comfort of familiar faces and the simple rhythms of chicken life.

As the years passed, Agatha’s world grew smaller. One by one, her flock mates were lost, until she found herself alone. For a chicken, companionship is not a luxury. It is essential. Without other hens to dust bathe with, roost beside, and forage alongside, loneliness can take a real toll.

Agatha’s family cared about her deeply, but they were no longer able to give her the life she deserved. Wanting better for her, they reached out for help.

That is how Agatha came to Little Oak Sanctuary.

Here, Agatha lives among other hens, free to form friendships again and enjoy the things that matter to her. She spends her days scratching in the dirt, basking in the sun, and quietly observing the world around her. True to her breed, she is gentle, calm, and a little bit regal.

Agatha’s story is a reminder that animals do not need to be rescued from dramatic situations to need sanctuary. Sometimes, they simply need companionship, safety, and a place where they are valued for who they are. At Little Oak, Agatha has found all three.

Help Birds

Aside from sea creatures, Chickens are the most exploited of all animals on earth.  Did you know that for every 100 animals killed for food, 98.5 are chickens?  Chickens are complex and intelligent birds who are often underestimated and undervalued.

At Little Oak Sanctuary we have over 100 birds in our care including hens, roosters, ducks, geese, turkeys, partridges, quail, and pigeons. We purchase between 10-15 bags of feed every week to feed these birds, and regular health checks and vet care where needed means any illnesses are identified and treated quickly. Its the high level of care these birds need and deserve, but it doesn't come cheaply.

When you become a sponsor at Little oak you will be helping Chickens, Roosters, Ducks, Geese and Turkeys. Your sponsorship will support Little Oak's essential advocacy work – sharing the stories of individual birds and the plight of their kind across the nation.
