Basil, Clovis & Eamon

"Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty." - Albert Einstein

Birth date:  1st January 2011
Rescue date: 1st March 2020

Basil, Eamon & Clovis are survivors. Beloved pets of an elderly couple living amidst picturesque Australian bush-land, their pleasant life became a living horror as the bush fires of 2020 impacted their home.

Situated on the side of a heavily forested mountain, the elderly couple were told to evacuate on the evening of January 31st, as the Big Jack Mountain was threatening the area.  Rushing out with only what they could carry including their rescued cats, they were unable to take their pigs to safety.

As the fire tore up the mountainside, it engulfed their property. The pigs' enclosure, being mostly dirt, provided a small fire break but the shade cloth above them and nearby house erupted in flames. The roar of the fire coming up the mountain, the heat, the smoke, would have been phenomenal.

Driven by absolute terror, Clovis, the 9-year-old spotted pig, leapt twice his body height to escape the enclosure, running from the horrific scene of burning trees, buildings and vehicles, and finding shelter at a nearby church. Basil and Eamon burrowed into the dirt as best they could. Eamon suffered superficial burns, but it was a miracle that all three survived.

Just like humans, animals feel fear and will do whatever they can do to protect their most precious possession, their life. Also, just like us, the trauma these three pigs have experienced takes time to overcome. We are here to provide these three pigs with a safe, stable and peaceful place to overcome their traumatic experience, and to ensure the rest of their life; filled with peace, gentleness, and comfort.

Sponsor a Pig

Pigs are the flagship species for Little Oak – indeed it was a pig who inspired us to start the sanctuary and of all animals, they hold a very special significance to us. Pigs are amazing beings, they are smart, funny characters, sadly we rarely get to see them as the individuals they are. Today, over 5 million pigs are confined in sheds across the country each year. Their lives are short and filled with suffering - but it doesn't have to be this way.

When you sponsor a pig you will be helping protect pigs. Your sponsorship will support Little Oak's essential advocacy work – sharing the stories of individual pigs and the plight of their kind across the nation.

Sponsor today, and we'll take you on a journey to learn more about pigs through our regular updates - exclusive only to our monthly sponsors. We'll also keep you up to date on how your monthly gifts are helping to secure a brighter future for the pigs at Little Oak, and their kind across Australia.
